FWIW, I use Sony SDT9000's (DDS3) on Solaris 2.7... From what you're
saying, it's as though there's a driver there, but possibly the wrong
one, or that there _is_ an issue properly detecting this drive under
solaris. One interesting (read "odd") note is that a google groups
search on "seagate DAT 24000" produces mostly European results! Add 
"solaris" to the search, and you land in Taiwan...


It sounds like you already have, but if you haven't actually done a 

        reboot -- -r

I would still suggest it just to make sure you have a fresh /dev. 
(Sorry if this path has already been pursued)

Lastly, will "dd" get any response out of the drive? I have used "dd"
on a  ufsdump tape, and then read the resulting file with ufsrestore 
successfully in the past, as in:

        dd if=/dev/rmt/0n of=crud.dmp
        ufsrestore -i -f crud.dmp
