Questions: (Understanding that I am a TOTAL GNUbie!) 1. Does a software package like PowerQuest's Drive Image exist under Linux? If so, does anyone in the LUG have it and know how to use it? 2. Have the computers been assembled, tested and burned-in with the hardware (monitor, NIC, mouse, etc.) that they will be delivered with to the schools? 3. What distro do they want to have loaded, does Computer Exchange have a copy of it, and do any of us have experience with it? 4. Will they be connected to a network and, if so, does the LUG have to do said configuration? 5. Are they looking to have the machines delivered with a "ready-to-run" windoze like GUI? 6. Are they looking to have this done at no expense to Computer Exchange. 7. Do they seriously want to have this done by tomorrow?
This sounds like a rather formidable task to me. My experience, although QUITE limited at this point compared to most of you, says that this is going to involve: 1. Installing their hard drive in a machine and determining what programs they have loaded and want loaded on these machines, unless they actually have a complete and working install, configured for the hardware to be delivered, on the hard disk they delivered to Computer Exchange 2. Talking one of their machines, installing the distro of choice, installing the applications that they want, configuring the apps to run from the GUI, and verifying that they work properly. 3. Image that install and then install that configuration on all 22 machines, assuming that each and every machine is IDENTICAL. 4. Check out the install after successfully transferring the image. Looks like a bit more than a lazy evenings of work to me. Heck, I bet it's even more than a "kegs" worth of work! Just my thoughts.
