I seriously doubt that. Have any of you looked at the Office of
Information Technology webpage? (http://www.state.la.us/oit) This
department is charged with "implementing a state master information
technology plan". They are producing "standards" that are being forced on
all state agencies. Being a state agency, we at Southeastern checked to
see if this affected us. We learned that higher education institutions
are "strongly encouraged" to follow the standards, but not required.
Good thing or i'd be looking for another job. Well... look at some of the
standards:

Personal Computing Operating System: Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro
Personal Computing Office Suite: Microsoft Office 2000
Enterprise Applications Electronic Messaging: Microsoft Exchange 2000
Personal Computing Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer
Personal Computing Network Operating System: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

About the only thing they got right:

Personal Computing Network Protocol: IETF TCP and IPv4

Obviously someone at Microsoft is in bed with someone at OIT. It is good
when the OIT can help standardize and support agencies that are too small
for their own IT department. It is bad that they are actively seeking out
and replacing Netware, Unix, and mainframe systems that have been working
great for years with inferior and more expensive products. If any LUG's
in Louisiana need a project, we should be battling the OIT's Microsoft
mentality.
