I couldn't agree more. The thing I like about Linux is the try before you buy aspect of "free software." If I like a distro, I buy it, or more likely, I buy the next release. I own Applixware's Office Anywhere, I own Libranet's Debian distro, and two copies of Redhat (Anyone want them? I switched to Debian after trying Libranet's distro.) If I like it, I buy it, or donate time or money. It isn't that I am worried that if they don't get my money that they might fold. It's more like applause they can use to buy pizza and beer. My forty bucks, or 80 bucks isn't going to change the world, but it might buy their kids a happy meal, and it is the only way I can say thanks for the software.
On the other hand, I still think one of the primary strengths of Open Source software, is that it doesn't cost anything to get started. I can take an old box and load state of the art software on it and give it away. That's it. No strings attached. No 1-800-r-u-legit, no license issues, just free. Here, I thought you could use this, it is all free, all yours and ready to use. That is what MicroSoft and the rest of them don't get. If MicroSoft gave away copies of Win98 and Office97 after they started selling XP and Office XP, there would be a lot less todo about Linux.
