I've heard Bill Gates quoted before as saying:

If Windows 3.1 would not have been the most pirated operating system
ever, it would not have also been the best selling operating system ever.

So he knows the power of "free" (as in beer) software, and chooses not to 
use it.  Too bad the RIAA doesn't see this either...
