APT-GET APT-GET APT-GET Debian has a database it uses to track
software installs. Any option the software offers (that will work
with your install) is setup via the apt-get install. Using other
methods for a production server is shooting yourself in both feet!

If, and only if, you are a bonafide guru, you can use build and still
stay stable and let the system know what you did to it. If you do
not know how to do that, use apt-get, use Woody, AVOID SARGE. If you
do know what that meant, always use apt-get and do not peek at
sources.list.
