I'm pretty sure SLU ACM still works similiarly. You can show up to one or two meetings no charge, and if you like what you see they ask that you help out and pay the dues. You are right, i think $5/semester is pretty reasonable. I was ACM president at SLU for 2 years, and can tell you the $5 dues goes solely to pay for pizza and drinks at every meeting, and dues alone do not always cover it.
