I think the RedHat Certified Engineer (RHCE) is the only Linux cert i
would bother messing with. And it is not cheap. It is $750 and the
closest place to take it is Houston or Atlanta. I hear it is rough too...
it's compared to the Cisco CCIE exam. Basically they put you in a lab on
a live network for 6 hours, break something, and you have to fix it.
There are some FAQs on Redhat's site. Failure rate is about 40%. So it
is not something you can hope to pass by just reading an ExamCram book...
because of that the cert has a pretty good reputation.

Redhat also has a Redhat Certified Technician (RHCT) cert that is not as
difficult as RHCE...more along the lines of Cisco CCNA.

On the other hand, Linux Professional Institute (lpi.org) certifications
are a joke. Any monkey with a Linux Unleashed book could pass those... so
it doesn't get a whole lot of respect from anyone that knows that. But it
is cheap (about $150?) and i think you can take it at any Prometric
center. So if you're just looking for a linux cert to put on the resume
inexpensively, then it's not a bad way to go. I think CompTIA also has
Linux+ which would be a similar alternative...

Those are the only linux certs that i ever hear anything about...if anyone
knows about anymore, let us know!
