We are about to start on a similar project, but probably using PCs loaded with something like the Mandrake Multi-Network Firewall. The biggest reason for us is that we have a large collection of pentium-2 class machines and cost is an issue. I'd be surprised if you find a dedicated piece of hardware like that at a better price than $300 with vpn capabilities.
