I wish that we had gone through the Network Wizzard again last night. It might have fixed things after we took that confusing winmodem out. After we took the winmodem out, wvdial's config program was able to see the real modem and set up dialing scripts. Red Hat seems to have set up other scripts for dial on demand and they might have worked too.
People were starting to get ugly and I think we blamed Red Hat for things beyond their control. What could be worse than saying the configuration was "Microsoft like" when it died? The wizard might have been able to recover given honest hardware and no one should be blamed for a winmodem besides it's maker.
