You don't need the software under windows since you can do it all over
the web.  I used to go the vmware route but see no reason to now

Actually, they do give it away as long as you fall under a certain tax
bracket.  You can file for free over the web if you fit certain
criteria.  Intuit (turbotax web) and kiplinger (taxcut web)
participate.  irs.gov has the details and linkage. It's too late now,
but good to know for next year.
