We did some benchmarking here at LIGO for the new beowulf. We did not do any benchmarking specifically for crypto, but I can tell you that the AMD with the NForce chipset outperformed the Intel in things like fast fourier transforms, etc. However, Intel ended up winning because of political reasons and also the option of moving to the intel compilers to further optimize our code in the long run. Intel compilers Vs. GCC would negate nearly any gains/losses between the different platforms.
Also, with the P4 the hyperthreading may give a slight advantage to Intel. We did testing before the HT was available.
