I also used knoppix to recover a corrupt partition table for a friend last night. He had 3 1/2 months worth of work on there that he thought he had lost. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> I am beginning to wonder if I really had put any data there...
