I have always used minicom or tip(1) to connect to tty ports. Never had
any issues on any cisco box.  In larger installation we'll set up a 25xx
(can't remember the exact model) with multiple tty ports and reverse
telnet to do out-of-band management.  Have also used Baytech terminal
servers as well, though those weren't as reliable as I'd like.
