Cleave: If you would like to use a utility for USE flags try an application calle= d "ufed". This application is usefull not only because it describes the flags at the console but also creates flags that you would not normally think about. For instance, if I were to build samba and did not want support for LDAP, I would think that by not adding the LDAP flag would be sufficient. However, that is not the case. I would have to add an -LDAP flag otherwise I would run into a great deal of trouble authenticating samba users in the regular fashion. The first time I tried I could not ge= t samba to authenticate the first time I used Gentoo. I think I got some errors in the logs about no LDAP server and that was my hint look into th= e makefiles.
Anyway, the gentoo manual clearly states that you should use the flags just as described, however, there quite a bit of them and this utility is quite handy to look up spelling, availability, description, etc. Good luck in you Gentoo Journey, ever since John Hebert recommendation I have not used anything else. I run it on one Mac and two PCs take care, Alvaro Zuniga got it......did it and moving right along. > I'm embarrassed to say that I tried installing twice from a stage3 > install yesterday and screwed it up by tinkering too much with the > make.conf and some other things. > Trying again today by just going with most of the defaults and once I'm > successful then I'll trash it and start digging deeper. > > I would like to eventually strip everything out except what I absolutel= y > want from a stage1 starting point. > > thanks again for the help Scott, > Cleve > > > At 10:39 AM 7/6/2003, you wrote: >>Cleve Allison <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: >> >> > I am installing gentoo on a Pentium II 400mHz system. >> > In the /etc/make.conf file......should I use: >> > >> > CHOST=3D"i686-pc-linux-gnu" >> >>Use this one for a PII ^^^. >> >> > >> > or >> > >> > CHOST=3D"i586-pc-linux-gnu" >> > >> > anyone have suggestions?
