They just had a new release recently also. It is much better than the previous releases (especially in UI and speed...). Also - Gentoo seems to be going pretty well. I plan on instaling it at work and on my laptop under vmware. Also, it looks like Tim answered your question about vmware. you can choose NAT, Bridged or "host only".
