I respectfully disagree that Sun could successfully "lock down" the concept
of a byte-code driven virtual machine.

Java is a different beast than the Microsoft OS or .NET. There is an already
existing community of Java developers who would use the last open spec to
develop a free virtual machine (see http://www.kaffe.org). Can you see the
Apache Jakarta project using something that requires a licensing fee? I
cannot.

Now, I do think that Sun would try something stupid like this given a
different market situation. The only difference between Scott McNealy and
Bill Gates is just a few tens of billions of dollars. But I think Sun has a
strong suspicion that it would backfire and alienate the majority of the
Java community. But who knows what would happen? I really don't think Sun
will ever be in the 800lb gorilla club. Maybe the 300lb club, but it will
still not be able to throw its weight around.

I'm looking forward to what Project Mad Hatter will do for Linux, in any
case. Maybe that will be what breaks Linux into the
good-enough-for-my-mother market.

Just give Sun the chance. Do you honestly think that Sun wouldn't lock
customers into their products, services, and protocols if given the
opportunity? It's a natural desire. Microsoft too was an underdog,
especially in the mid-90's when NT was relatively new and just beginning
to
push into businesses. There was a large user and system administrator
community huddled around Windows since Microsoft was trying to market a
product that would reduce cost, and, so they were told, headaches. Sound

familiar?

Java is basically open with a few gotchas. So is .NET. They can both get
you.

I think we have had this argument before, but about Apple. My point then
as
now is that just because a company is an underdog when it comes to a
particular market or issue doesn't make it benign.
