I for one agree whole-heartedly with what Fedora is doing. I've been reading the Fedora mailing lists and watching the IRC channels since way before they had the idea of officially merging with the Red Hat Linux Project. Basically, the idea is to let the community in on the development process, accelerate development of the community-level project, and use the innovations that result to build a better Enterprise Linux. I guess no matter what, people are going to be unhappy. With the old way it was "Red Hat has total control of the distribution, those fascist microsoft-like monopolists! I want a distribution that the Community develops!" This way it's, "Red Hat DROPPED(!) support for Free Linux! How dare they leave it up to the community to make a distribution and not even promise to keep support for it for 3 years!" (Yes, I've heard both from the reactionary-types.) However, I really think that this is a step in the right direction. Community users get a great OS that's kept on the leading edge of development and the same great community support that they've always had (-- mailing lists such as this one, IRC, newsgroups, the LDP). Enterprises get an Enterprise-Grade Linux that's still Open Source and has the backing of the vendor, while being supportable by the community. > > > > Hey, give the guy a break.
