As in committing money or capital in order to gain a financial return?
No
As in to spend or devote for future advantage or benefit ?
mabe, but this one is debatable :-)
As in to devote morally or psychologically, as to a purpose; commit?
Yes IMHO there certianly is a level of commitment involved when
choosing any software for a a particular operation/task, and you
implimenting their software( I assume you impliment the software since
you bought it ) is an investment of sorts. I think the question should
be: I pay Microsoft for "my" software. Do I benefit? Would it be more or
less beneficial to pay another vendor for similar packages?

They are certianly commited to a purpose, I think the government calls
it "intrests", and GNU, GPL and Linux do not fit into Microsofts
current "best intrests"( from a profitable/greed standpoint anyhow ).
