I don't want to incite a riot and mabe I am wrong on the cause of your 
issue, but I have had and heard of many many troubles with stage 3 
installations.  I think the customability of gentoo is great, but it 
seems to me that the pre optimized stage2 and 3's  cause alot of 
heartache. Often It seems time might be saved starting from stage1,  
(genkernel is your friend).  Yes portage allows you to rebuild 
everything at almost any moment but when you can install from an 
existing install, a knoppix cd, a pxe image or just about any imaginable 
way I don't see the benifit of optimized stage3 installs.  You can easly 
over optimize a system, and if time to install is a major factor mabe 
another distro should be used untill more time might be available.
