To that end, we could post a list of requirements for
the LAN party so that participants could prepare in
advance.

Here's the first draft:
1. Buy and install a copy of HalfLife. It's cheap.
2. Make sure you have a working network card with
TCP/IP configured.
(okay, I realize all should have this already, but
just for completeness.)
3. Make sure HL multiplayer works by connecting to a
HL server on the Internet.
4. Download HL:Countersrike
(http://www.counter-strike.net/), it's free. Seems to
require the installation of Steam, to stop cheating
smacktards.
