make the directory! seriously, ntop (and sometimes other programs too...) have a default set of paths that it will try to use. If it is not there, it freaks out, instead of making the necessary directories. Or it may not have permission to make the directory. I don't remember if ntop runs as root or not. Anyway, just "mkdir /var/ntop" and make sure it has permission to create files in that directory.
