Actually, if I remember correctly I have had this identical problem 
when building from source now that I think about it.  It has been about 
a year or so since I installed ntop, but I will be installing it again 
soon.  I started using this package in '99 or '00 when it was barely 
functional.  ntop has come a long way since Luca started it.
