There are several DNS packages for Debian. I've used a caching proxy and BIND itself because Cox performance comes and goes. BIND has given me instant response. The caching servers were also better than Cox, CanadaISP or any "server" at LSU. I don't know what LSU runs, but I imagine it's BIND. You can run it too.
Someone once told me that BIND required a lot of traffic. Running eatherape, I saw that it is a little noisy, but nothing like an XP box running Return to Castle W.
