I did a hard disk install of FeatherLinux on my test machine last evening. It
took all of about 6 minutes to do the installation. It apparently found and
properly configured all of the hardware. According to the web site, the install
script is still under development and further enhancements are planned. As it
is presently, it doesn't offer a lot of options regarding how it installs
itself or I just may not have discovered those options. During installation it
asks for both a root password and a password for user Knoppix but didn't allow
me to create a new user. I rebooted and it loaded flawlessly, quickly and
without offering the opportunity to choose what user should log in so I assume
that it logged me in as root. Is this typical of fluxbox? Is there a log-in
manager for fluxbox that can be called before startx? I also wasn't able to
find an option to log out and log back in as a different user either.

Next I ran through the scripts to install FireFox, Thunderbird, The Gimp,
Synaptic, Java, and OpenOffice. All seemed to install perfectly except for
Synaptic which hung the machine during the installation process and required a
hard reset to get going again. FireFox connected immediately to the Internet
but seems that Java doesn't work. Synaptic doesn't work at all. OpenOffice
seemed to install fine but didn't create a desktop icon like the other appys
did so it has to be started from the CLI. I configured Thunderbird and it
worked great too. The Gimp just SCREAMS! I may do a reinstall over the weekend
and will investigate other options.

Fluxbox questions:

1. Log in manager?
2. How do you create a desktop icon to launch an application?
3. How do you edit the kicker menus?
4. Will KDE appys like k3b, Koffice, etc run on Fluxbox?

That's all for now.
