If Knoppix works why not install it?

I just put Sarge on a Thinkpad 600 and can say, count your blessings. Because
I bought the system broken for $75, I was happy just to get it running by
replacing the backup battery. It's a 233MHz PII with 64MB RAM. It can run
KDE 3.2 but does better with Window Maker and Dillo. Neither Mepis nor
Knoppix did much better with the devices than I was able to do by hand, even
after reading several sites devoted to this notoriously buggy piece of
hardware. Sound and the serial ports are going to take some work, and
Windoze tweaking (thank goodness I did not wipe the 98 install that came with
it) but I doubt I'll get around to it. The screen, processor and form factor
are enough to make me overlook other problems and I'm very happy with it as
an upgrade over the 90MHz PI Thinkpad I've had for years.

I'll bet that Mepis and straight Sarge work too. Mepis can be upgraded and
kept current with apt, though it's a trial. If you remove all but the
testing lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list, upkeep gets much easier. The
new Sarge installer does a lot of hardware autodetect and works well if you
give it about six gigs of disk space.
