AIX has a system management database, similar to the Windows registry, 
called the ODM (Object Database Manager).  But it is much less complex 
than Windows registry.  And when something goes wrong or gets out of sync, 
there are enough low level commands provided to actually fix the problem.
And for the most part, ODM is only used for the OS.  3rd party apps can, 
but generally don't use it.

So a registry might not be a totally bad thing.  Microsoft just didn't do 
it correctly.
