It's strange to me however, that the controller isn't already in the latest
2.6 kernels from Gentoo.  I first suspected Debian of being their usual
slow, backwards selves, but there must be some sort of other reason why the
controller drivers aren't in the stock Linux kernels....

Let me know how it comes out.

Yeah, it's the right chipset and the driver is GPL.  Their documentation, 
however, is mostly for Red Hat and is very Microsofty.  They packaged their 
manuals as DOC!  Oh well, I can't fault them for my inability to roll their 
source into a kernel.

seems to have what I was looking for.  I had only modified my Makefile.  The

above author says I also need to modify something called Config.in  I'm
going 
to try it  today and let you know how it comes out.  

Because ITE released this GPL, I imagine it will get rolled into stock 
kernels.  If it were not for that, the $40 card would have been back at the 
CompUSA by now.
