Sounds great. The Belkin wireless card should work with Mepis. They have a
nifty GUI network configuration tool that brings up network interfaces if it
does not happen automagically. Go back, plug it in and wait a while. DHCP,
is slow and not always reliable, especially in a crowded cafe. KDE also has
several wifi tools that show signal strength, network name and other useful
stuff. Wireless networks are a pain in the neck, but useful enough to be
worth the effort.

The only way to be sure a card works is to plug it in and see it. You can
watch it register in /var/log/messages or not and that's good indication.
The ultimate proof, of course, is browsing with it. A good shop will have a
default wireless access point to prove your card works in your computer. I
bring my laptop with me and won't buy a card that won't work.

Sorry to hear it exploded on you.

If there's no "must have" networked application, don't bother networking
windows. You can get files to and from your windows partition by mounting
under Mepis and you are much better off using Mepis for surfing, email and
other network activity. Your Windows partition will last longer and work
better this way and you will have a much better time on the web.
