I'd like to start a discussion about helping with the aftermath of Katrina.
What can we do?

What me and my wife and some friends are planning to do after work today is
to volunteer at the local Red Cross shelter at the Lamar-Dixon Center in
Gonzales. If you would like more information on volunteering with Red Cross,
see http://www.batonrouge.redcross.org.

However, the relief effort will be massive and the need for help will be
ongoing for months. What can we do, as a bunch of geeks, to help out? I have
a few ideas I'd like to share, but I want to hear from others first.

I know one thing sorely missing is any sort of information about
flooding in neighborhoods. If you check the forums on WWL, there is
basically NO information coming out of the city anymore. What few phones
are working are not anymore. What I don't understand is that Gov. Blanco
keeps saying we cant or couldn't get the resources to plug that hole in
the 17th st canal. How is this possible with a problem of this
magnitude? Im no army COE, but I would think that plugging a hole is
something they have encountered once or twice. Or somebody has...

Im frankly amazed by the mishandling of this and the inaction on the
part of the government. Nagin looks defeated and Blanco looks scared
shitless.

The people, however, haven't given up. Most ppl have been rescued by
John Q public on a flatboat. Those people are truly doing a great job.

Sorry for the rant but at this point im kind of freaking out.

Im down to help in any way you guys come up with... count me in.

Chris

my uncle is a civ E and stayed behind. He doesn't believe they can
repair that breach any time soon until the water level settles.

I already know I lost my house just based on raw flyover footage and
forum info form nonla.com and wwl. we're getting here north of Jackson
MS. It's okay. we have each other, our pets, clothes, import papers,
and photos.

Ive been working a bit. I support some Navy stuff from UNO. we
transferred much function to a remote site and I've been doing that.
unfortunately, my emloyer was in harahan so I don't know how or if I'd
be able to get paid.

Such is the way it is. But I feel really fortunate and looking for a way
to start helping down there.

that's not my interpretation at all. After all, what do you expect?
Blanco has been shedding a lot of tears. I think both officials have
seen a lot more than they're telling the news media. We've gotten some
raw footage and live footage here in jackson from WDSU new orleans folks
that moved up here and it's pretty rough stuff.

Right now it's thoughts and prayers and communication that help.
