You can have all the firewalls, software or hardware (although I am not sure how multiple firewalls would help much), but, in the true sense of the word, any service you have that's publicly available to the internet is vulnerable. If you connect to any service you are vulnerable. There are precautions you can take of course, to make your systems less vulnerable, but its at the cost of the information you make available, and that which you wish to access on the net. Its like using cars versus the pollution that they cause.
So your friend is right, but I think he made it sound a bit worse than it really is. If you follow safe internet usage guidelines, you should be fine. About Microsoft having GNU/Linux, I am not surprised. I'd be surprised if they didn't, for several reasons: Sun Tzu said that the best way to defeat your enemy is to know your enemy; By using GNU/Linux, Microsoft can put together a stable, modern, operating system with almost no development cost. Ask your friend about some of the other things that Microsoft spends money researching.
