To clarify....... I did not use Amarok to make the tones..... Normal audio command line tools would do, or iTunes itself.
To transfer the tones into the iPhoney, that is the difficult part without iTunes. The whole scheme is designed so that average user go buy a song from Apple, then selects part of the song as ringtone, then buys that again.
