Hi Paul, I've encountered similar errors with various causes when attempting to build. And I could not deploy until I upgraded to the latest maintenance release of MarkLogic Server (at the time it was 4.1-3, but I think the current is now -4).
I successfully built and deployed after deleting every trace of the sample app (forest, database, etc.) and upgrading. I suggest you check your version and try the same steps.
