Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you (I was on another project).

This week I set up PerformanceMeters and ran tests over the two
databases--same content, one with only one forest, the other with two.

For most of the tests the database with the two forests was faster, but not
by much. So, I'm not sure that the two forests affected search speed that
much (as Michael Blakeley had suggested earlier in this thread). Still I'm
glad I tried it and enjoyed using PerformanceMeters (
https://github.com/marklogic/performance-meters).
