Can't speak to most of this, but you can certainly download more than just the latest version of java. I can never remember the new path, but java.sun.com should get you to the right place to find whichever version you need, guessing maybe java 6_43. (The "correct" path... http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html).
