Couldn't agree more. Some people come to J when they find it's a superb playground for published algorithms. Me too. I'll shortly collide with this topic when I come to patch up Tabula in JAL. It's suffered damage in the recent withdrawal of d. and D. (The backfit heuristics raise a |value error – but recover and muddle-on to completion.) But I'm a rabbit at optimization algorithms, so I'll have to take a back seat and watch. As ever, my interest is on bringing up the trailing edge, for the benefit of newcomers.
