It generates gump descriptors. I've got no idea how useful they are
though.

The real key is that I want to specify the version of various common
components that I want to use. For more details, see
http://jakarta.apache.org/gump/why.html and
http://jakarta.apache.org/ant/manual/sysclasspath.html
Maven started with a promise that it would be able to generate Gump
descriptors. What's the status of that effort?
