hi Rajan

(if you haven't found it already) you might like to read

http://jakarta.apache.org/site/getinvolved.html

and

http://jakarta.apache.org/site/guidelines.html

to give you an idea of the way that jakarta works.

i'd say that the best way to start to contribute to the jakarta community
is to find some projects that interest you, join the mailing lists and
then start (trying) to answer user questions. answering questions for
users really is valuable to everybody and is also a good way to learn.

once you're a little more familiar with the personalities on the lists and
you want to move towards contributing patches, i think that the best way
to start to get to know the source is to create documentation patches
(whether user documentation or improvements to doc comments).
documentation is one area where enhancements are always welcomed. once you
know the source, then you'll be a good position to understand what needs
doing and how it might be done, and you'll be able to discuss it
intelligently with other developers in the community.

hope that helps a little.
