A little, first let me assure you that James is still 100% active and is
not in any way end-of-line.
James developers have been working on an approach to make James core
container agnostic, and to allow for the distribution of container specific
versions.
There is no time line, but the James team are confident that we have the
ability to provide the same level of support to our users that we have
always done, if the issues are container issues we have a number of options
which give us the ability to address these.

There are other Avalon based containers, I think Merlin is one that James
may work in.

Tomcat is a web application container, hence entirely unsuitable for
running James.
However it might be an idea for a wet-weekend to see if we could hack out
"JimCat" a tomcat/james hybrid...
