I just noticed that Apple has introduced the new Intel-based
replacement for their top of the line Power Mac G5 Quad: it is
the Mac Pro Quad Xeon 64-bit workstation. It has two dual-core
Intel Xeon chips, speeds up to 3 GHz, and said to be 2x faster
than the old G5. Naturally, I'm lusting after such a machine.
What is perhaps even more interesting is the preview of the
next OS X release, called "leopard", due in Spring '07. Apple's
web site says that it will have:
64-bit addressing of up to 16 exabytes of
virtual memory and 4 terabytes physical
Full 64-bit arithmetic
64-bit development tools, etc.
I hope that J can make use of this platform provide full
support for the 64-bit arithmetic for Mac users.
