Here's drag and drop installation without any sudo.

Basically it's a drag and drop installation
of j601 into Home with additiona drag of
libj601.dylib into /usr/lib.

Fresh install

1. Download the .gz file on Desktop.
2. Double-click: j601 folder created
3. Drag j601 folder under your Home (/Users/user) folder
4. In Finder menu select: Goto|Folder
type "/usr/lib": window with that folder opens
6. Drag file libj601.dylib from Home/j601
   to "/usr/lib"; authenticate yourself
7. In Home/j601 double-click the red J icon:
   should start J
8. In Dock, right-click J icon, select Keep in Dock

Update:

The same as above, but beforehand,
 - drag j601/user and j601/addons to Desktop
 - drag j601 to Trash
Then do install as above and
 - drag user and addons from Desktop to Home/j601
