Hopefully these are temporary issues until there
is a new J release: j602, which will include
JAL support:
 - the "not recommended" applies, except for now
   it is necessary to seed the Package Manager initially
 - the Linux is the same as Mac, and in the new version,
   you should not have to be dealing the archives directly,
   so it won't be an issue either
 - curl support was added specifically for Macs as it is
   pre-installed as opposed to wget

Now you can run Package Mananger from time to time
to see if it identifies new installs. It is worthwhile
to initially download everything. Then you will know
what addons are being recently updated.
