Keith, I wouldn't worry too much about this error, unless you use J via COM. If you just use the J IDE, j.exe (or jconsole.exe, jee.exe, jep.exe, jwdp, etc), you'll be fine. The error indicates that J couldn't register its COM objects. Those objects are used to embed J in another programming language; if you don't (intend to) do that, ignore the error (A). A larger problem is that Windows 98 support has been decommitted as of J 6. See the sixth to last sentence on http://www.jsoftware.com/help/user/relhigh.htm#incompat reads: Windows 95, 98, and ME support is decommitted (required by unicode support). If you cannot change your OS (Linux is free), you may need to run an older version of J. J 5.04b, the latest version compatible with Windows 98, is available here: http://www.jsoftware.com/archive.htm -Dan (A) OTOH, if you do need to use J via COM, and are worried about the error, the most likely cause is that J couldn't modify the appropriate part of the registry. In Windows NT-based OSes, this is usually due to privilege restrictions; you must be an admin on the machine where you want to register COM objects. But I don't even remember if Windows 98 has privileged users (or multiple users, for that matter). If you can log in as an admin, do so, and try installing J again. If that doesn't work, it may be that Win98's COM support or registry layout is different from WinNT's, and more thorough research will be required. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For information about J forums see http://www.jsoftware.com/forums.htm
