Eric,
the problem was obviously due to a wrong sound driver. Now everything
can be controlled by the sound control panel as suggested by Oleg and
Bill. I followed your advice to switch to J601 and it worked
immediately. Thanks everybody for your help.

I am developing application comparing different ascii files.
Whenever a file is selected under wdhandler, or an Info window opens
a beep alerts, I'd like to switch that off.
