Howdy, I have been using J to extract GPS information from XML files. Specifically I have been using a Forerunner 205 which records basic time/distance info for runners, but also has track points so that longitude, latitude and altitude for the route are available. I have been using J to extract the info and mesh it with topographic maps so that runs/hikes/drive routes can be automatically drawn. An example of routes I take to Sunfish pond is shown at: http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~reiterc/hikes/sunfish/home/sunfish_routes.png I can think of nice features to add, but I am largely content with my J work in this regard, and could already use it extensively in the process of writing dreamed of hiking books. But it also occurs to me that this might be made more robust and made available to the J community.
(1) Does anyone have similar data sets and interest in letting me see how easy it is to modify my tools to support data from other devices? (2) Am I missing something obvious (like someone else did this 5 years ago (and I know web sites do some of this, but so far I prefer the high resolution and control over data details possible in J)) I welcome comments on-forum or off-forum as you see fit.
