A variation on this uses <;.1 Assuming the '<' character is the first character in the xml file (separate operation to guarantee that), you get xml tags and their immediate text in boxes. This probably is not an advantage for your case (searching in boxes is less efficient than searching flat text), but ... I guess I'm agreeing with you that cuts are the best way to handle simple xml tasks.
