I think that's pretty clear even if atoms are arrays.  In that case,
normal english usage has the second sentence as an exception
to the first.

That said, adding "Except, " to the beginning of the second sentence
would remove any ambiguity for people not comfortable with normal
english usage.  (And would serve as emphasis for those who are.)
