[Further digressions on this line probably belong in chat.] I think that mixing two conflicting concepts of J (the version from ISI, and his scheme program) might also be an issue. In my opinion, he has had to do a lot of work to get his own implementation working, and so he as "backwards compatability" issues which none of us are seeing. Note that I am not completely convinced that scheme requires some of the subtle differences between what he is doing and how J really works, but I have not bothered with trying what he is doing, and so do not have anything better to offer. Anyways, given that his experience and approach is so radically different from mine, I figure I am better off just pointing him at the documentation.
