David - don't be scared - most of the file is not necessary. The two
important items are defining the explicit shell name, then invoking it via
"(shell)". I just tested and found I can define the name to be a .bat file
that runs J console so the shell command starts J console directly without
first starting DOS.
I really can't help you with the syntax coloring as I've opted out of that
since I prefer light text on a dark background and this apparently stymies
syntax coloring. I am in the habit of developing with both an emacs session
alongside an IJX window, so I get syntax coloring in the latter. However,
the comment in the
j-mode file indicates that J syntax can't be handled well by emacs parsing
rules anyway so it's probably a lost cause there.
Good luck,
Devon
