The startup in Emacs can be simpler, I think. Here's an excerpt out of
my .emacs file:

| (autoload 'j-mode "j-mode.el" "Major mode for J." t)
| (autoload 'j-shell "j-mode.el" "Run J from emacs." t)
| (setq auto-mode-alist
| (cons '("\\.ij[rstp]" . j-mode) auto-mode-alist))

The first two lines load stuff into Emacs; the last tells Emacs to apply
j-mode to any file ending in .ijr, .ijs, .ijt, or .ijp.
I think j-mode will fontify (color) your J. You'll need to put the
j-mode.el file in your site-lisp directory.
I did see that I had customized a few Emacs variables to point to an
older copy of J; I'll have to delete or fix that before I can test it
again.
